"Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine

In another story about magic gone mischievously wrong, strong-willed Ella of Frell wrestles with the blessing a foolish fairy bestowed on her at birth: the gift of obedience. Ella is compelled to do whatever she is told, whether it is eating an entire banquet herself, or serving herself up as an ogre's supper! Her mother shields her from the worst of the curse throughout her childhood, but when Ella's mother takes ill and dies, Ella is left to fend for herself.

Things go from bad to worse when Ella's new step-sister notices her strange compulsion, and begins to take advantage of it. It doesn't take Ella long to realize that her curse is more than an annoyance--it is mortally dangerous to herself and everyone she loves, including her friend Prince Char. Ella sets out on a quest to find the fairy who bestowed the gift and make her take it back, but in the end discovers that she herself is the only one who can break the curse.

A humorous, fast-paced take on the Cinderella story, sure to charm girls from ten to one hundred and ten. This is a modern classic no home library should be without.

It's practically sacrilege that I call myself a fan of retellings and haven't read this one! I got it on audiobook once, couldn't stand the narrator, and never picked it up again. I did just pick up a copy of Fairest, though; I've always held more of a torch for Snow White. ;)
